Cusco has a subtropical highland climate, characterized by dry winters and rainy summers, with cool temperatures year-round due to its high elevation in the Andes.
Dry Season (May–September) is the best time for clear skies and comfortable temperatures, perfect for exploring Machu Picchu, trekking the Inca Trail, and enjoying vibrant festivals like Inti Raymi in June. Though this is the peak tourist season, the stunning mountain views and ideal hiking conditions make it worth the trip.
Rainy Season (November–March) brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds. While heavy rains can make some trails muddy and challenging, this season is perfect for experiencing Cusco’s cultural sites, local markets, and museums with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Shoulder Seasons (April & October) offer a balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists. These months provide great opportunities for exploring archaeological sites, hiking scenic trails, and enjoying local traditions without the peak-season crowds.
Cusco’s weather is shaped by its high-altitude location in the Andes, resulting in two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry Season (May–October)
During the dry season, Cusco enjoys sunny days and cool nights, with temperatures ranging from 0°C to 20°C (32°F to 68°F). Skies are mostly clear, making this the best time for outdoor activities like exploring Machu Picchu and trekking the Inca Trail. However, nights can be cold, sometimes reaching freezing temperatures, especially in June and July.
Rainy Season (November–April)
The rainy season brings more frequent showers, especially from January to March, with temperatures ranging between 5°C and 18°C (41°F to 64°F). Mornings may start sunny, but afternoon rain is common. While the landscape becomes lush and green, travelers should be prepared for muddy trails and occasional travel delays due to heavy rain.
Regardless of the season, Cusco’s climate is unpredictable, with rapid weather changes throughout the day, so dressing in layers is always recommended.
